We thought it was about time to introduce you to the makers behind our fabulous handmade goodies in-store…so, in the next of our Meet the Makers of OHC specials, please say hello to Vicky of Accidental Vix…
How did you become a designer/maker?
I have a degree in Interior Architecture and Design so I guess it feels like I’ve always been a designer, but my day job isn’t quite as creative as it sounds and involves a lot of technical drawing, project management and building sites. Don’t get me wrong, I love my day job, but I wanted a creative outlet that allows a bit more freedom. The creative push came when I broke my hip/shattered my femur in 2007 and had many months bedridden with just a sketchbook and pen for company; that was the start of Accidental Vix.
How did you choose your business name and what’s the meaning behind it?
I have always been accident prone, with broken bones in the double figures, which has resulted in lots of time staring at the same 4 walls, especially after having major surgery on my hip three times. The best way for me to distract myself from the pain and stay entertained is to pick up my sketchbook and pen and fill many a sketchbook with ideas, doodles and moments of insanity.
Do you run your business full time or balance another job as well?
Accidental Vix is run around my full time job designing shops as an Interior Designer, being a mum to my gorgeous one year old son Harry, and wife to my amazingly supportive husband.
How do you fit it all in and find the balance?
Life is definitely a balancing act, but if you love something enough you will find time to do it, even if that means very little sleep. Sketching and sewing are my passion and I fit it in where I can, from a train journey, to an hour in a café before a site meeting, to a quick sleepy sketch before bed.
What’s your favourite thing about running your business?
I get to spend time with my son and husband, who also works from home, and of course I make a living doing what I love. Running a business is hard work, but I get a say on all aspects and can reduce or increase work load to fit around my day job and family. But most importantly I get to share my creative take on life with others.
As an artist I work hard to create pieces from children’s bibs and booties to quirky sketches that express my view of the world, after all it’s our quirks and imperfections that make us who we are. Although I have a wide range of creative outlets they are all tied together by looking at things from a different and eclectic perspective, drawing on my passions for illustration, surface pattern design, printing and sewing, as well as my day job as an interior designer.
Of all the things you’ve ever made, which has been your favourite?
There are too many to choose from, but my favourite range is my ‘As scene by me’ range of illustrations of local Yorkshire landmarks, which you will find in Our Handmade Collective. One of my favourite sketches is of The Grove, Ilkley as it reminds me of home sweet home.
