We thought it was about time to introduce you to the makers behind our fabulous handmade goodies in-store…so, in the next of our Meet the Makers of OHC specials, please say hello to Jo of CherryPeg….
How did you become a designer/maker?
My favourite thing to do when I was little was play with my Grandma’s workbasket – she taught me to sew and crochet. I loved art & design all through school and after that I did a degree in textiles at university. When my two boys were very little I rediscovered sewing and loved having a creative outlet again. As my children got older and I had a bit more spare time, I started making things for presents, then to sell at craft fairs and online.
How did you choose your business name and what’s the meaning behind it?
I wanted a friendly name that wouldn’t pigeonhole me too much so I made one up!
Do you run your business full time or balance another job as well?
I have another job as well, at a university, which I really love. On the face of it, it’s totally different from making but a lot of the skills I use day to day in my job really help me in running my microbusiness.
How do you make time for it all?
Hmm, it’s tricky that’s for sure! I have a lot of lists and then carve out little blocks of time to do things in, mostly in the evenings. Also, I always have several things on the go at once
What’s your favourite thing about running your business?
Choosing fabrics and colour combinations for my products has to be one of my favourite things. That and working out how to make my ideas into reality – I love working out the technical details for something new.
Of all the things you’ve ever made, which has been your favourite?
I made a couple of patchwork quilts a few years back, just for fun as you do. My boys adopted them and like to have them on top of their duvets on cold nights. It’s an amazing feeling when something you’ve made is loved and used. Really, that’s the motivation behind why I do what I do!
